Most GBA cores boot without a BIOS. gba_bios.bin is optional and fixes a few intro glitches. The game still needs to be a dump of a cartridge you own.
The battery-free cartridge still stores the save in the emulator's SRAM file. Back that file up before you rename the ROM.
